Natural moissanite is extremely rare and typically dark green or black in color, lacking the aesthetic appeal for jewelry. Thus, early moissanite was primarily used as an industrial abrasive. It was the American company Charles & Colvard that truly brought moissanite into the gem market and made it a star in the jewelry industry.

In 1995, Charles & Colvard established its headquarters at the Triangle Research Park in North Carolina. In the same state, there was a company called Cree, a global leader in silicon carbide semiconductor materials.

Cree grew silicon carbide crystals using a high-temperature sublimation method to manufacture high-performance chips and LED bulbs. Charles & Colvard's CEO once stated, "Cree is the global leader in silicon carbide manufacturing. These silicon carbide crystals help them make light bulbs and also help us make moissanite."

Charles & Colvard keenly realized that this high-quality silicon carbide crystal, mass-produced in the semiconductor industry, was the perfect raw material for gemstones. They capitalized on this technological advantage and signed an exclusive supply agreement with Cree.

This meant that Charles & Colvard monopolized the largest and highest-quality gem-grade silicon carbide crystal source in the market at that time. They purchased crystals from Cree and used their gem-cutting and jewelry design expertise to transform industrial materials into dazzling moissanite gemstones.

With a guaranteed raw material supply, Charles & Colvard identified an excellent market entry point: at the end of the 1990s, consumers, especially millennials, were increasingly seeking "ethical diamonds" (conflict-free, eco-friendly) and cost-effective gemstones.

Charles & Colvard positioned moissanite as an affordable and sustainable alternative to diamonds. Through marketing efforts, they emphasized moissanite's superior brilliance, 9.25 Mohs hardness, and affordable price, successfully attracting young consumers who valued both aesthetics and budget-conscious, ethical purchases.

They established commercial barriers through patent protection and exclusive agreements and became pioneers in the commercialization of synthetic moissanite with precise market positioning.

This is why they are hailed as "pioneers in laboratory-grown diamonds and moissanite"—because they pioneered the transformation of semiconductor materials into jewelry.
